Mileage Costs of Plug-in Hybrids
I continue to read with optimism the PHEV (plug-in hybrid vehicle) concept, especially the Chevy Volt. TESLA also put out a paper a while back (July, 2006) regarding its entry. My question is this: At US $0.10-0.12 a kWh from my local utility, how much will it cost me to drive the Volt's fully charged 40 miles? Since I don't have any idea how many "miles per kWh" it takes, I can't make the calculation...and I've looked at BTU and megajoule equivalents and I now have a headache. -- Art F., Dallas, TX

It has been a bad  wakeup call for Lexington to realize we are NOTa green city let alone a "model green city". We are the worst City in a 100 city survey. We have a long way to go...maybe with President Obama we can begin to get the Federal Regulatory Support and end to phoney "Gas Tax Holidays" to make some changes, end our use of coal without sequestering CO2 and look at new renewable sources of Energy as well reconsidering next generation Nuclear Power.

It is an exciting time for the Lexington climate change awareness and ACTION movement.

Locally, our Mayor Newberry and the full LFUCG City Council is supporting joining ICLEI.org Local Governments For Sustainability to get a clear measurement of Lexington's CO2 footprint and then reduce to 1990 levels. (see LexCoolCity.org: a GreenLex partner site for more info!) Gov. Beshear has a Green Working Group pushing for sustainable changes inside KY State Government and statewide.

Nationally, all the major candidates SUPPORT Cap and Trade. So, we need to prepare for the shift from Dirty Coal to clean energy in Kentucky. It is interesting to note that Barack Obama proposes investing $150 billion over 10 years in R&D for renewables, biofuels, efficiency, and other clean tech. Hilary Clinton proposes $50 billion and McCain does not have a target. See a candidate comparison on the Grist.org
